Moment OAP zooms the wrong way on the M55: Motorists forced to swerve

This is the shocking moment an OAP zoomed the wrong way on the M55, forcing motorists to swerve to avoid a crash.

The Citroën C1 was filmed via dashcam footage driving head-on towards oncoming traffic on the motorway towards Preston on Thursday afternoon. 

Frightening footage shows the car - driven by an elderly woman - zooming down the third lane of the road before the motorist filming quickly changes lane to avoid a serious smash. 

The Citroën driver was then intercepted by police and removed from the motorway.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: 'We were called at about 3.30pm yesterday (Thursday, September 26) to reports of a car driving the wrong way on the M55.

'Motorway patrols attended and located the driver, fortunately without further incident.

'The driver, an elderly woman, was removed from the motorway and further enquiries are ongoing regarding her suitability to continue to drive.'

In April this year, another incident saw a motorist narrowly avoid a head-on crash after driving the wrong way down a motorway slip road.

The dark coloured car was seen moments from disaster after being caught on dashcam going against the traffic at a junction on the M8 near Glasgow. 

The footage, taken by a motorist known only as Matt, showed the car powering towards him as he left the motorway at J27 in Renfrewshire.

Video shows the moment the headlights of the other vehicle, which Matt initially mistook for bright street lamps, came into view before he is forced to brake as the other car comes into view.

Matt then sounds his horn as the oblivious motorist appears to continue the wrong way down the slip road, having apparently erred by turning onto the exit rather than the entrance to the motorway.

In August 2022, shocking footage was revealed showing motorists performing U-turns on a busy motorway and driving the wrong way up a slip road to avoid traffic jams.

Footage showed several cars, vans and even a motorhome cutting across the hatched markings to skip queues at J4a near Fleet, Hampshire, on the M3. 

The driver of a dark blue SUV was even seen reversing back down the motorway before turning around to drive into oncoming traffic up the slip road.
