Trans teachers should be able to use preferred toilets, governors told

Transgender teachers should be able to use staff school toilets that align with their new gender identity, governors have been told.

The National Governance Association (NGA), which runs training for school governors and trustees, makes the suggestion in advice for its equality and diversity course.

It states: ‘Employees who have undergone gender reassignment or who are transgender must be supported to use all toilet and shower facilities which are available to other members of their newly acquired gender.’

The NGA says its guidance is provided to governors to help them form staffing policies that are in line with the Equality Act.

But Caroline Ffiske, from Conservatives for Women, said: ‘The NGA is providing training that is incorrect in law. Employers and service providers are able to use provisions in the Equality Act to protect single sex spaces for women.’

Maya Forstater, of charity Sex Matters, said: ‘It is deeply disturbing that governors are being misinformed by the NGA.’
