A pedestrian in his 60s has been left in a critical condition after being struck by an unmarked police car.

Bedfordshire Police have launched a probe into the incident, which occurred at around 2am yesterday, near the Marsh Leys roundabout in Kempston.

Following the crash on the slip road heading onto the A421, the man was rushed to hospital.

The police force has reported the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The unmarked police car was not responding to an incident or engaged in a pursuit at the time of the crash, the BBC reports.

Bedfordshire Police closed the carriageway in both directions, before reopening it at around 11am that same day.

The man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Officials are urging anyone with dashcam footage and witnesses to approach them.
