Driver killed and child in hospital after three-car smash

A driver was killed and a child passenger airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a three-vehicle crash.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the incident on the A483 near Welshpool in Powys, Wales.

A red BMW X3, a blue Audi S4, and a white Toyota Yaris collided at 6.15pm on Saturday.

The BMW and the Audi were travelling northbound while the Toyota was travelling in the opposite direction.

Police say the driver of the Toyota Yaris died at the scene and a child passenger of the same car was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Dyfed-Powys Police said two men, aged 29 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 29-year-old is also under investigation for driving after having taken drugs.

The road was closed overnight while specialist collision investigators carried out their enquiries before re-opening at 9.50am on Sunday.

Police are appealing for anyone who can help the investigation to come forward. 

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: 'Dyfed-Powys Police is appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision near Welshpool, yesterday (Saturday, 16 November). 

'The collision, involving three cars - a red BMW X3, blue Audi S4, and white Toyota Yaris - occurred on the A483 at Belan, at approximately 6.15pm.

'Sadly, the driver of the white Toyota Yaris died at the scene. A child passenger of the same car was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. 

'HM coroner and next of kin is aware. Specially trained police officers are supporting their family. 

'Anyone with information that could help with the investigation, including anyone who was travelling along the road at the relevant time with dashcam footage, is asked to report it.'
