Lidia Thorpe is slammed by Aussies over King Charles outburst

by · Mail Online

Independent senator Lidia Thorpe has been slammed for her protest stunt against King Charles in Parliament House in Canberra on Monday afternoon.

The King had just finished speaking in the Great Hall when Ms Thorpe roared out a torrent of abuse at the monarch

'You committed genocide against our people, give us our land back!' she shouted, while draped in a native fur coat.

'Give us what you stole from us! Our bones, our skulls, our people, you destroyed our land!

'Give us a treaty, we want a treaty in this country! This is not your land, this is not your land! You are not my King, you are not our King. You're a genocidalist!'

As she was dragged away from the scene, she was heard yelling: 'F*** the colony, f*** the colony.'

The response on social media to the controversial senator's outburst was swift and brutal.

'Good old Lidia Thorpe Can't help making a D******* of herself. She should be removed from Politics once and for all,' one wrote.

'Lidia Thorpe is making a cracking fool of herself screaming abuse at King Charles right now,' wrote another on X.

A third simply said: 'What an embarrassment to Australia.'

Former treasurer Joe Hockey did not hold back in his condemnation - suggesting she should no longer be invited to official functions.

'If an MP or Senator seeks attention by misbehaving when we have visiting dignitaries then they should be suspended from attending the next three similar events,' he wrote.

King Charles' royal Australian tour LIVE: Lidia Thorpe speaks out after outburst

'No matter what your views please be respectful of guests.'

High-profile entertainment reporter Peter Ford called out Ms Thorpe's double standards.

'So everyone must respect the Welcome to Country ceremonies,' he wrote.

'But Lidia - who signed oath to the Crown - doesn't have to respect the reigning Monarch when choosing to be in his presence. What a shocker she is!'

Senator Thorpe's actions in Parliament were preceded by a bizarre altercation with the police hours earlier.

When a small group of protesters outside the Australian War Memorial were told to move on by police, Ms Thorpe was seen arguing with a police officer who held onto her shirt.

She then pulled her shirt off and stormed away from the officer.

'Everything that we suffer in this country is because of that colonial invasion,' she said after the tussle.

Ms Thorpe, who was elected as a Greens senator for Victoria before leaving that party and going independent, has often been vocal about her feelings towards the monarchy.

Last year she, along with representatives from 11 other countries, co-signed a letter urging King Charles to apologise for the effect of colonisation.

Another online commenter asked 'How is someone who so blatantly violates their oath/affirmation still allowed to stay serving as a senator', referring to the oath of allegiance to the monarch that all Australian politicians have to swear.

Others also picked up on the same theme, with one X user writing: 'Whether she likes it or not, she has sworn allegiance to the Crown.

'Surely her broken oath warrants removal from parliament?'

Many people also resorted to foul language to express their anger at Ms Thorpe, with one person on X writing 'Sack Lidia Thorpe now' and another referring to her as a 'stain'.

One person even set up an online poll with the question 'Is Lidia Thorpe a dropkick?'

At the time of writing, 91.4 per cent of those who voted said 'Yes.'
