A 12-year-old boy was found dead just weeks after he started a new school term, an inquest has heard.

The family of Marc Aguilar tried desperately to save him before paramedics arrived and he was tragically pronounced dead at his Cardiff home.

An inquest in Pontypridd heard that the cause of Marc's death in his family home on Saturday 14 September had not been determined, with one theory being that the youngster might have suffered a 'medical event'.

The inquest heard Marc's family have 'raised concerns' about the circumstances surrounding his death.

South Wales Coroner Patricia Morgan adjourned the inquest to a date yet to be fixed saying she believed Marc's death was 'unnatural' and needed further investigation.

Coroner's officer Beverly Morgan said: 'Marc was located in his bedroom by a family member. Family members assisted until the arrival of paramedics.'

Family member Daniel Arthur said: 'What would've been such a beautiful day ended in catastrophic circumstances, our little cousin Marc passed away aged 12.

'The family are truly heartbroken.'

Mr Arthur went on to describe Marc as 'such a nice polite boy', adding, 'we were lucky to have such a pleasure of knowing him'.

Marc's school, Ysgol Bro Edern in Cardiff, announced his death in a letter to parents and said the year eight pupil had 'shone in the world of sports'.

In a tribute online, the school added: 'It is with great sadness that we announce that one of our pupils passed away suddenly over the weekend.

'Marc Aguilar was a popular and likeable pupil and a keen sportsman. He had many friends at Bro Edern and he will be missed sorely.'

The school, in Penylan, Cardiff, said staff members had visited the family and a team of counsellors had been made available to support pupils and staff.

Marc was described by a family member as 'such a nice polite boy' and added 'we were lucky to have such a pleasure of knowing him!'

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: 'South Wales Police is investigating the sudden and unexplained death of a 12-year-old boy in St Mellons, Cardiff, on behalf of HM Coroner.

'Emergency services were called to the boy's home address just after 4pm on Saturday, September 14.

'There are no suspicious circumstances, and an investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.'
