A Northumberland businessman has appeared in court accused of attacking his former girlfriend.

Nigel King was in the dock to face an allegation of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which was said to have taken place on Christmas Eve last year. The 70-year-old is also suspected of damaging the woman's Samsung phone to the value of £250.

King, of Holiday Bungalows, Low Hauxley, near Amble, in Northumberland, didn't enter pleas to one count each of ABH and criminal damage. Instead, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the brief hearing at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.

Paul Coulson, prosecuting, said the case was suitable to be tried by magistrates. He added: "There is no significantly complicated matters in this case. The Crown would say it's suitable for summary trial."

David Parish, defending, said he had no representations about where the case could be heard but indicated that King would be electing to go to the crown court.
