King's coronation cost revealed as taxpayers fork out eye-watering sum

by · ChronicleLive

Official accounts have disclosed that the King's coronation came with a hefty price tag of £72 million for taxpayers.

The breakdown includes £50.3 million from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and £21.7 million allocated by the Home Office for policing the extraordinary event in May 2023.

The grand ceremony, which saw Charles crowned at Westminster Abbey, was attended by global dignitaries. A glamorous concert at Windsor Castle followed the next evening.

According to the DCMS annual report, the department "successfully delivered on the central weekend of His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation, enjoyed by many millions both in the UK and across the globe".

As the principal government department collaborating with the Royal household on the coronation, DCMS hailed the event as a "once-in-a-generation moment which provided an occasion for the entire country to come together in celebration, and offered a unique opportunity to celebrate and strengthen our national identity and showcase the UK to the world".
