Inquest opens into death of Jayden McGuinness, 16, who died following Newcastle crash

An inquest into the death of a teenager who died following a collision in Newcastle has been formally opened.

Jayden Brian McGuinness died after being involved in a collision with a silver Volkswagen Golf on Walker Road in the Byker area of the city on September 27. The 16-year-old was riding a bicycle at the time and sustained serious injuries before passing away at the Royal Victoria Infirmary two days later.

Following the collision, a full investigation was launched by Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit. As part of inquiries, officers arrested a man in connection with the collision and 28-year-old Ryan Elsender of Newcastle, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday, October 28.

On Monday, an inquest into Jayden's death was formally opened at Newcastle Coroner's Court, but was adjourned due to the ongoing legal proceedings. Senior Coroner Georgina Nolan told the inquest that a post-mortem found the provisional cause of Jayden's death to be "blunt force head injury".

Senior Coroner Georgina Nolan adjourned the inquest, with a review taking place within 14 days of October 28.
