Newcastle nightclub packed out as top DJ hosts city's first ever sober rave

by · ChronicleLive

A famous Newcastle nightclub held a very different kind of event at the weekend, when top DJ and local legend Patrick Topping took it over for the city's first ever sober rave.

Having brought a whole host of top music acts to Tyneside in the summer, as his event TrickFest opened this year's LooseFest, Patrick announced last month that he'd teamed up with city centre World Headquarters to stage a completely tee-total rave, before being completely blown away by the response and people clamoured to register for tickets.

They were all snapped up as soon as they went on sale and on Sunday, October 27 it was time for all those who managed to get their hands on one to head down to Carliol Square to enjoy six hours of sets, as dance anthems filled the air inside the club from 2pm right until 8.

The venue was completely packed out by clubbers for the completely tee-total event and, just like he was over the demand for tickets, Geordie superstar DJ Patrick was overwhelmed by how things went on the day and the feedback he's received, Taking to Instagram to share some footage from the Sober October Rave, he wrote: "First sober rave, wow! Some people thought I was mad for starting an alcohol free event, but it sold out and atmosphere was insane! This isn’t about taking away people's choice, it’s about providing an extra choice. Also some people need this type of event. It was nice to speak to people who told some of their sobriety stories."

He continued: "Such a mix of people there, fitness fanatics, people in recovery, but mainly sober curious ravers who didn’t want to feel like s**t the next day for change It was amazing to see the energy and everyone proper going for it! I was so nervous for this, but I had a massive feeling it would work and thankfully it did, I’m f**kin buzzing!"

Patrick signed off his Instagram post by hinting that there are already plans afoot for a similar event in January, traditionally a month when many people give up the booze after a bit too much over indulgence over Christmas and New Year.
