Robbery accused appears at court over alleged raid at Gateshead shop

A man has appeared in court over an alleged raid at a a Tyneside convenience store.

The incident happened at the Premier shop, on Prince Consort Road, in Gateshead, at around 10am on Wednesday November 6. Police said it was reported that a man in possession of a metal rod stole three bottles of alcohol from the shop.

Now George Eastland has been charged with one count of robbery. The 29-year-old, of no fixed abode, made his first appearance at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on November 9.

The case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court where Eastland will appear next month. He has been remanded in custody until his next hearing.

Shop manager Ram Gurrala told the Chronicle he was relieved no-one was hurt in the alleged robbery.

The 27-year-old said: "If you lose some money it's ok, but at the end of the day if someone got hurt it would be another thing."
