Urgent warning to holidaymakers visiting Canary Islands over rise of 'deadly' winter viruses
by Graeme Murray · ChronicleLiveUK holidaymakers eyeing a getaway to Tenerife and Lanzarote have been met with an urgent health warning. With a spike in "deadly" winter viruses across the Canary Islands, travellers are strongly advised to wear masks in public spaces and ensure their vaccinations are current before departure.
Health leaders from the Canary Islands Association of Primary Care Physicians raised the alarm following increased cases of Covid, flu, and RSV beginning August. The Canary destination traditionally attracts many UK visitors over Christmas.
Compared to England's rate of 60 per 100,000, as per government figures, the islands are currently experiencing infections affecting 794 individuals out of every 100,000. Although symptoms may be mild in young, healthy people, there's a severe risk for older individuals with existing health issues and young children who could potentially face life-threatening complications.
Ana Joyanes, president of AMAPCAN, spoke to GB News about the situation, cautioning that cases are likely to escalate through the winter period. In her words: "Vaccination is essential to make the impact of these infections milder or avoid them altogether, especially if you are over 60 years of age or classed as vulnerable. Anyone with respiratory symptoms should wear a mask to prevent transmission."
She stated: "Both flu and Covid can be deadly. If we are protected, we will fare better against the viruses.", reports the Mirror.
Authorities in the region are considering bringing back mandatory masks to curb infection rates. The official decision on new restrictions is expected to be made later this month.
The Canary Islands draw in travellers at this time of the year, offering warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and a reasonably short flight from the UK. However, those planning to escape to destinations like Tenerife, Lanzarote, or Gran Canaria need to stay vigilant.
Health adviser Ana Joyanes has warned that case numbers could climb as the colder months approach. She advises UK visitors to ensure their vaccinations are up to date before their holidays.
Moreover, she suggests that tourists exhibiting any respiratory symptoms should wear masks. It might be sensible to bring one along.
According to Canarian Weekly, there's an upcoming meeting between the Ministry of Health and area leaders to deliberate on mask-wearing policies across different levels of risk. This could lead to enforced mask use in some indoor settings such as hospital waiting areas.
Currently, there is no requirement for masks in the Canary Islands, but the situation may change with the introduction of new health measures.
