Five arrests and 131 vehicles stopped during Northumbria Police crackdown on rural crime
by David Huntley · ChronicleLiveFive arrests have been made and over 130 vehicles stopped during a Northumbria Police crackdown on rural crime.
The latest initiative on rural crime in the North East was staged earlier this month as part of Operation Checkpoint. The operation sees Northumbria Police join partner forces Cumbria, Cleveland and Police Scotland to tackle rural crime, wildlife and poaching offences.
As well as partners, Northumbria’s officers were once again supported by more than 20 Rural Crime Volunteers. Collectively, the latest activity saw 131 vehicles stopped, 14 vehicles searched, and two vehicles seized.
Nine people were stopped and searched, and five people were arrested including one wanted suspect. Two people were issued with fixed penalty notices and another two reported for driving with no insurance.
Inspector Garry Neill, of Northumbria Police’s dedicated Rural Crime Team, said: “Operation Checkpoint is a great example of police forces and partners working together to deliver positive results. We are committed to protecting our rural communities and prevent them being targeted. We want to send a very clear message to anyone intent on travelling across borders to commit offences that we are here to stop you in your tracks.”
