Urgent call for action as DWP sets deadline for benefits switch to Universal Credit

The Department for Work and Pensions is in the process of moving millions of people from old-style 'legacy' benefits - such as jobseeker's allowance, employment support allowance and tax credits - to Universal Credit

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is prompting scores of benefit recipients to take timely action within the next six months in order to avoid cessation of their benefits.

In an extensive shift, DWP is transitioning millions from traditional 'legacy' benefits such as jobseeker's allowance, employment support allowance and tax credits to the Universal Credit system.

A series of correspondence, known as migration notices, are on route to individuals who need to submit a Universal Credit application to maintain their benefit payments.

This Monday, the DWP highlighted that Tax Credits will be fully phased out by April 2025, signifying a half-year period for claimants to make necessary arrangements. The welfare agency is advising claimants to heed their migration notice deadlines to preserve their benefit entitlements.

Recipients who get a migration notice have a three-month window from the letter's date to apply for Universal Credit. No immediate action is required by tax credit claimants until they receive their specific migration notice from the DWP, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Expert assistance with claims is available upon contacting the DWP, emphasising the importance of a seamless shift ahead of claimants' respective deadlines.

Sir Stephen Timms, the Minister for Social Security and Disability, remarked: "Having three months to make a move may feel like a long time but life can often distract you elsewhere. For the best chance to secure your benefit entitlement don't delay with responding to your migration notice."

"We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and customers will have the full support of DWP staff to help manage this change."
