A man has died after being hit by a car in the early hours of this morning.

At around 1.20am today (Tuesday), Northumbria Police received a report that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian on the A1058 Coast Road, between the Corner House and Cradlewell. Emergency services attended, where a 50-year-old man was found with fatal injuries.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, he died at the scene a short time later. The man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

An investigation was launched into the circumstances of the incident and a man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody while enquiries are ongoing.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision to get in touch.

Sergeant John Sanderson, of Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life. Our thoughts remain with his family as they look to come to terms with the loss of their loved one.

"We are committed to investigating and better understanding the circumstances that led to collision and would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. Your dashcam footage or information could prove vital in our investigation."

Witnesses should send a direct message on social media, use the live chat on the Force website or visit this link. Those with dashcam footage can upload footage via this link. For those unable to contact the Force in those ways, call 101. Please quote log number NP-20241022-0045.
