A prolific thief has been banned from Durham City for three years.

Marc Cox appeared at Newton Aycliffe magistrates court on Thursday, October 10, where he admitted a series of thefts following a shopping spree last month.

At his first appearance in court, Cox plead guilty to two counts of theft and public order offences.

The 40-year-old, from Ushaw Moor, received a two-year community order, as well as a three-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) which bans him from entering Durham City.

PC Settrey, from the Durham City Neighbourhood team, said: “Businesses have been blighted by Cox’s behaviour for some time now so I hope this result demonstrates that we are working to address shoplifting and prevent further offending from these individuals.

“The tide is turning and with the newly introduced public space protection order (PSPO) we hope to further improve life in the city and protect businesses and residents who deserve to be able to live, work, study or simply enjoy our historic city in peace.”
