Full steam ahead for rail nationalisation as landmark plan becomes law
by Graeme Whitfield, Nick Lester Chief Lords Reporter · ChronicleLiveThe Government's landmark resolution to bring rail passenger services back into public ownership has reached a pivotal moment as the legislation officially becomes law.
The Lord Speaker, Lord McFall of Alcluith, made the announcement regarding the Royal assent bestowed upon the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill at the commencement of proceedings in the upper chamber on Thursday. This crucial development paves the way for the state to assume control of services from private operators as their contracts end or if they fail to meet obligations, thereby circumventing the need to pay these companies early termination fees.
Transport Secretary Louise Haigh embraced the advancement, stating: "This marks a historic moment for our railways."
As part of the bill's progression through Parliament, additional commitments were made to enhance travel for disabled rail users. Notably, it was clarified in the legal framework that public train operators must honour a binding equality duty.
