A woman was hit on the back of the head with 'a baseball bat' before two strangers attempted to steal her phone.

Officers are appealing to the public for information following the shocking assault near a Metro station.

Police received a report that a woman had been assaulted near Meadow Well Metro station on Saturday, September 21 at 9.45pm. It was reported that the victim, aged 23, had been approached from behind by an unknown man while walking through the underpass towards Ripley Avenue.

She was then struck across the back of the head with an object – believed to be a baseball bat – before two people then attempted to steal the woman’s phone. The man and the other person then made off on bikes in the direction of Bridge Road South.

The woman did not sustain any injuries but was left understandably shaken by the incident.

One of the offenders has been described as a 5ft 10ins male in their late teens with a local accent. It is believed he was also wearing a black hoodie at the time of the incident. Northumbria Police say a number of enquiries have been carried out since the assault was first reported to police.

Officers are now appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and has any information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
