The coin in question is a 2023 King Charles 50p. On TikTok, notable collector @CoinCollectingWizard shed light on the coin, explaining: "The coin you need to look for is the Atlantic Salmon 50p. The Atlantic Salmon 50p coin is now the rarest 50p coin in active circulation with only 200,000 released to UK banks and post offices."
Further emphasising its significance, they added: "This is an exciting day in the world of coin collecting as the Atlantic Salmon coin takes the crown from the almighty Kew Gardens 50p which held the title for the past 15 years."
This limited edition release, known as the Atlantic Salmon 50p, was produced towards the end of 2023 in celebration of the Coronation year of King Charles. @CoinCollectingWizard articulated the shift in status by saying: "The coin has now officially overtaken the Kew Gardens 50p which had a mintage of 210,000 when it was introduced in 2009.", reports the Daily Record.
Coin collectors, it would seem, have a new holy grail to pursue.
Coin enthusiasts have seen prices soar, with the value settling around the £100 mark on platforms such as eBay and various coin groups. Rebecca Morgan from the Royal Mint shared her excitement about this elusive coin: "Finding these special designs, like the Atlantic salmon, in your change is a win for all collectors."
Social media is alive with discussions about the coin, with comments swarming in from users.
One person boasted on TikTok: "I have them all," while another lamented the difficulty of unearthing such treasures: "So hard to find!"
@CoinCollectingWizard also shared that a 10p coin featuring a North East landmark could also be a hidden fortune. Talking about the Angel of The North 10p, he said: "Here is a 10p with the letter A for the Angel of the North, and these coins were minted in 2018 and 2019. This is the rarest 10p you can find."
