Police update after suspected cannabis farm found on Whitley Bay street

A 37-year-old man was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of the production of a Class B drug

Northumbria Police has confirmed a man arrested in Whitley Bay yesterday on suspicion of the production of a Class B drug has been bailed, pending further enquiries.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and buildings in Station Road evacuated at about 8am yesterday, after Northumbria Police was alerted to a suspected cannabis farm at a premises.

Emergency services attended the scene, with several businesses and families in the street evacuated as a precaution.

The owner of both Pranzo Trattoria and Bottega Pranzo, two Italian eateries in Station Road, posted this message on Facebook: "Due to unforeseen circumstances and an emergency situation on Station Road, we have been advised by police to evacuate and so will not be open today in the Restaurant or Focacceria."

Those who were evacuated were allowed to return to their properties and businesses later in the day.
