Police seek pair over Sunderland scam that saw elderly couple told to hand over £2,500 for roof repairs

by · ChronicleLive

A man and woman "attempted to scam an elderly couple" in their own home in Sunderland by reportedly telling them they needed to hand over £2,500 for "essential" roof repairs.

That's according to a report made to Northumbria Police over an incident in August. The police has now released images of two people the force wants to trace in connection with this incident. The police were informed at 1.25pm on August 22 that a man and woman had been "suspected bogus traders".

The police said the elderly couple had received a visit at their Hylton Castle home from two people claiming to be repairing a neighbour's roof. The alleged bogus traders then demanded £2,500 for apparently "essential" repairs to the property.

The victims suspected this was a scam and did not hand over the cash - instead reporting the case to police. The man and woman are then believed to have driven out of the area.

Northumbria Police has been carrying out enquiries - and now officers have released images of those they are seeking to speak to. It is believed they were in the area at the time and could assist with the investigation.

The man or woman, or anyone who recognises them, is asked to contact Northumbria Police by sending a direct message on social media, using the live chat or "tell us about" pages of the force's website.
