Newcastle transport development requires important input from residents and businesses
People in Newcastle are being invited to help shape the city’s transport development as a seven-week consultation gets under way

That's what Newcastle City Council wants to know as it invites people to help shape the city's transport development. Residents, businesses, groups and organisations from across the city are asked to share information about their journeys and what they see as being the main transport priorities. I comes as a seven-week consultation gets under way.
People's feedback will be used to help develop a new Movement Strategy for the city, which will set out the ambition for what transport in and around Newcastle should look like by 2045.
Cllr Marion Williams, Cabinet Member for a Sustainable City at Newcastle City Council, said: "This is about ensuring we have the right transport networks in place to improve how we move around the city and address key environmental, social and economic priorities. We want to make our networks and journeys more efficient, sustainable, safe, accessible and inclusive – ensuring people can make the right transport choices to meet their needs.
"We need to hear from as many people and organisations as possible to help us understand what their priorities are and how they think our transport networks should be developed over the next 20 years. The more voices we hear the stronger our strategy will be so whether people walk, wheel, cycle, use public transport or drive, this is everyone’s opportunity to help us create a transport network that’s better for everyone."
The Movement Strategy will focus on key issues, including:
- Net Zero Newcastle: Focusing on low-emission travel and climate resilience.
- Sustainable Growth: Supporting businesses and providing access to opportunities like jobs and education.
- Healthier, Active, and Safe Travel: Promoting health and well-being through safe and active travel.
- Inclusive, Connected, and Efficient Travel: Ensuring the transport network benefits all residents and visitors.
People can find out more about the Movement Strategy and take part in the consultation by completing an online questionnaire at www.newcastle.gov.uk/movement-strategy
The website will also include details of a series of public events that will be held where people can discuss the strategy and share their thoughts directly with officers from the council. The consultation will run for seven weeks, from Monday 14 October until Friday 29 November.
The Movement Strategy for Newcastle will supplement the regional transport plan as well as the city’s Local Plan, which sets out how wider development and planning policy will help to shape the city in the future.
