More than £27,000 raised for families involved in fatal Newcastle house explosion

by · ChronicleLive

More than £27,000 has been raised for the families involved in a Newcastle house explosion that claimed the lives of a boy and a man.

Last week, emergency services descended on Violet Close, in the Benwell area of the city, following a huge explosion and fire. The major incident tragically claimed the lives of seven-year-old Archie York and Jason 'Jay' Laws, 34.

On Tuesday, forensic officers in white overalls could be seen working at the site, as investigations to establish what caused the explosion continue. Northumbria Police said it was working alongside other agencies. Six people were taken to hospital following the incident, with five being discharged soon afterwards. But one man, who is in his 30s, remains in hospital. His condition has been described as "critical but stable".

Following the explosion, a Gofundme page was set up by Kieran Chapman, with the aim of raising £50,000 for the families involved. So far, a massive £27,838 has been raised.

A note from Kieran on the page states: "Can we please come together as a community to raise as much money as possible for the families involved. Imagine your life being turned completely upside down, because of your home exploding.

"I do not know these families, but I want to help. The explosion was that big, I live four miles away in my caravan and the van actually shook, I thought it was a mini earthquake. I'm sure we can all spare at-least £1."

It adds: " I wish all families involved a full recovery, and with our raised £50,000 this will certainly help them recuperate a fraction of what they have lost." Donations can be made here.

A number of tributes have since been paid to Archie and Jay. Jay was described by his brother as the “best dad in the world” as he said he would remind his brother’s kids “as they get older” and promised “they will grow up to be respectful proper adults and not miss out on anything”. He concluded his heartbreaking tribute by saying “you live on”, and: “When [I] say a thousand memories [I] mean a thousand and I love you till I see you again my brosky."
