Passenger in 20s dies in A69 crash at Throckley as road remains closed
by Adam Foster · ChronicleLiveA man has died after a car crash on the A69 in Newcastle.
Shortly after 11.30pm on Thursday, police received a report of a one-vehicle collision on the A69 close to Throckley.
It was reported that a grey Ford Raptor car was travelling westbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it has come off the road.
Emergency services attended the scene, where a passenger – a man aged in his 20s - was found to have sustained serious injuries.
He sadly died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
A man aged in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody at this time.
The road remains closed and is expected to remain so for some time.
Officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit have launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision – and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
They are particularly keen to hear from motorists who were driving in the area at the time, and any witnesses who may have dashcam footage or CCTV of the moments leading up the collision which could assist their enquiries.
Chief Inspector Alan Pitchford, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly lost his life.
"Our thoughts remain firmly with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time, and we will offer them any support we can."
Ch Insp Pitchford added: "Our officers have launched a full investigation to determine exactly what happened in the moments leading to this collision.
"I would urge anyone who may have information regarding what took place – no matter how insignificant it may seem – to contact us.
"We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage in the moments leading to the collision which could assist our enquiries."
