A police investigation has been launched after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash involving an electric motorcycle.

The crash happened on Sheriffs Highway in the Low Fell area of Gateshead on Friday, November 8. Police officers were alerted to the collision, which involved a 67-year-old man and an electric motorcycle, just after 5pm.

The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and emergency services descended on the scene. The man remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The rider of the motorcycle left the scene before police arrived. The bike was described as dark in colour.

Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit have launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision and locate all of those involved. Officers have today (Wednesday) appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly keen to hear from the rider, or anyone who was driving in the area at the time, and any witnesses who may have dashcam footage or CCTV which could assist their inquiries. Witnesses can get in touch with Northumbria Police by sending a private message on social media, or by using the live chat function on the Force website. Anyone who is unable to make contact in these ways can call 101, quoting reference number: NP-20241108-0826.
