Newcastle council looking for accommodation for families forced out of homes by Benwell explosion

Police have now confirmed that two people, a seven-year-old boy and a man in his 30s, lost their lives in the blast, which happened on Violet Close early on Wednesday morning. Another man, also in his 30s is fighting for life in hospital. Harrowing aerial photos have revealed the scale of devastation at the block where the blast happened, with several homes appearing to have been completely destroyed.
Residents were offered shelter at a rest centre set-up at a nearby community centre on Wednesday. And now Newcastle City Council is working to find long-term accommodation for all those who have been forced out of their homes.
The authority's leader, Coun Karen Kilgour, explained that some families had been housed in hotels or were staying with family until longer-term homes are found.
“We are deeply saddened to learn that a man has tragically lost his life following yesterday’s incident at Violet Close. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all those affected by this heart-breaking news. It is devastating that two people have lost their lives, and our thoughts remain firmly with their loved ones at this incredibly difficult time," she said.
“Our immediate focus is on supporting the residents who have been displaced from their homes. Our housing officers have ensured that everyone has a safe place to stay while investigations continue, and we will remain committed to helping those impacted by this tragic event. Some residents have found accommodation with friends and family, while others are in temporary hotel accommodation as we work to secure suitable long-term options."
Investigations into what caused the blast are continuing at the scene, where a collection of flowers continues to grow.
Coun Kilgour added: "I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the emergency services for their tireless efforts at the scene and to the local community for their support during this difficult time. The safety and wellbeing of our residents is our top priority, and we will continue to provide any necessary assistance for as long as it’s needed.”
