Seafront playpark in Sunderland which school children helped design to officially open this weekend
by David Huntley · ChronicleLiveA new outdoor children’s play park in Sunderland is set to officially open this weekend.
Pupils from Seaburn Dene Primary School were invited to test out the play equipment having played a key role in designing the park from its inception. Over the past few years, the school children have worked with Sunderland City Council and contractors to shape the designs, with suggestions of rainbow swings, a tree house, woodland area and a lighthouse slide all being brought to life through the development.
Incorporating a diverse range of accessible and inclusive play equipment, the park has also been designed to ensure children of all abilities can participate in and enjoy it. Special attention has been given to accessibility and inclusion, resulting in a family and wheelchair-friendly environment with multi-level play areas, panoramic views, digital play equipment, sand and sensory zones, and wheelchair-friendly picnic tables.
Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration and business at Sunderland City Council, said: “The completion of the play park is an exciting moment for everyone involved in the development, not least the pupils who have been absolutely brilliant to work with.
“It will perfectly complement the numerous developments which have completely transformed the city’s seafront over recent years, showcasing our commitment to enhancing the local leisure offering as well as our dedication to creating spaces where the community, especially our younger residents, can really thrive.”
Set in a landscaped area with over 31 new trees, wildflower zones, and a re-profiled watercourse, the park’s natural elements promote biodiversity and help children connect with nature. Natural materials have also been utilised throughout, with all timber sustainably sourced, including repurposed hardwood from a specialist reclamation yard.
Located on land near Cut Throat Dene, behind the Seaburn Inn, the play area represents another significant investment in the area. The park, which was officially opened by the Mayor and the children of Seaburn Dene Primary School, has been constructed by BCE Northern Ltd, which has also worked on local regeneration projects including the Town Park and St Peter’s Church.
Boldyn Networks, Sunderland City Council’s smart city partner, has also supported the development through the incorporation of interactive digital play equipment and installation of free super-fast Wi-Fi.
The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Allison Chisnall, said: “This new play park is a wonderful space that will provide children with an exciting and safe environment to explore and play. It’s designed to be inclusive, ensuring that all children, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the facilities and engage with one another.
“By prioritising accessibility and incorporating modern, child-friendly features, we are fostering a community where every child can thrive and create lasting memories.”
