by · ChronicleLive

Plans have been submitted to decarbonise Whickham Police Station, on Front Street, in a bid to meet government net-zero targets.

Northumbria Police are seeking permission to make Whickham Police Station more environmentally friendly. According to documents submitted to Gateshead Council. The proposed scheme has received funding from Salix, a public body which administers funds on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The potential works include:

  • Demolition of the custody unit and the “associated making good” of the rear car park.
  • Replacement of the gas fire heating system with air-source heat pumps
  • Installation of 34 new solar panels on the garage roofs
  • The installation of the paved seating area to the rear of the site, around 80m2
  • Replacement ceilings
  • Replacement carpets
  • Decoration throughout
  • Installation of new WCs, tea points and changing facilities
  • New external and internal CCTV cameras

According to Gateshead Council's online planning portal. The application was validated by Gateshead Council on Friday, October 4 and is awaiting a decision from local authority officials.

From 2004 to March 31, 2023, Salix helped the public sector commit to over 22,000 projects through £3.3bn worth of funding, saving 1.2m tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. In addition, Salix administered £7.27m to Gateshead Council to assist with the connection of four local authority buildings to the council’s own eating network.

The funds also went towards the installation of a 2-megawatt solar panel farm on the Baltic Quarter, among other energy projects. The second most recent application to alter the police station dates back to 2004 when the force applied for additional car parking bays and improvements to the secure compound at the rear of the station.
