Man in court accused of snatching woman's handbag in busy Newcastle city centre
by Sara Nichol · ChronicleLiveA man has appeared in court accused of snatching a woman's handbag in the middle of a busy city centre.
Alexander McClymont is alleged to have grabbed the bag at the Haymarket, in Newcastle City Centre, on August 14 last year. A court heard that the 39-year-old is suspected of making-off with the handbag and its contents, which were of un unknown value.
McClymont, of Adams Avenue, in North Ayreshire, in Scotland, was in the dock at Newcastle Magistrates' Court this week to face one count of robbery. Because of the seriousness of the charge, no plea was taken and McClymont spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.
Jonathan Stirland, prosecuting, said the case could only be heard at the crown court, adding: "The Crown would invite you to send it there."
District Judge Paul Currer said: "The allegation is indictable only, which means it can only be dealt with at the crown court, which is why you have not been asked to enter a plea yet. You will next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on December 18 at 10am.
"It's in the same building, just on the floors above. If you fail to attend, you potentially commit an offence under the bail act, for which you can be prosecuted. Keep in touch with your solicitor. There's no conditions on you bail."
