Two taken to hospital after Scotswood Road collision closes road during rush hour
by Nicole Goodwin · ChronicleLiveTwo people have been taken to hospital following a rush hour collision which closed a busy Newcastle road.
Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to a two-vehicle collision on Scotswood Road at around 8.10am this morning. The incident happened at the junction with Violet Close and a section of the road had to be closed for some time while emergency services responded at the scene.
Traffic was diverted via Newcastle Business Park and Northumbria Police advised drivers to avoid the area as huge tailbacks stretched along Scotswood Road heading towards Newcastle city centre.
North East Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader to the scene, and transported two patients to the RVI with injuries which are not believed to be serious.
The road was closed for a short period to allow for the uplift of the vehicles but has since reopened.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 8.14am on Friday 13 December to reports of a road traffic incident on Scotswood Road in Newcastle. We dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader to the scene, and transported two patients to the RVI for further treatment."
In an earlier statement, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 8.10am today (Friday), we received a report of a collision on Scotswood Road in Newcastle. Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible."
The force have since confirmed that the road has reopened following recovery of the vehicles involved.
Photos from the scene show Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) also at the scene of the collision, which ChronicleLive understands involved a black Volkswagen Passat and a blue Renault Clio.
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm that earlier this morning (Friday 13th December), an appliance from Newcastle Central Community Fire Station attended a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Scotswood Road in Newcastle.
"The emergency call was received by our control room from the Police at 8.17 a.m. requesting our assistance, and the crew were on-scene within five minutes.
"Firefighters dealt with a petrol spillage that had leaked from one of the vehicles."
