Three dogs destroyed after Newcastle Council worker mauled in Fawdon street during house repair job

A Newcastle City Council worker was attending a routine repair job at a house on Amherst Road, in Fawdon, when he was attacked by three dogs in the street. The man - who is in his 60s - suffered serious injuries to his head, face and hand and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Northumbria Police attended the scene and seized three dogs believed to have been Presa Canarios, a breed which is not banned in the UK. All three dogs have now been destroyed.
A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of being the owner of a dog which was dangerously out of control and has since been released on bail.
The injured man has since been discharged from hospital following the incident on the morning of October 23. He is continuing his recovery at home.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 11am on Wednesday, October 23, we received a report of a disturbance on Amherst Road in the Fawdon area of Newcastle. It was reported that a man in his 60s had been attacked by three dogs.
"Emergency services attended and the man was found to have sustained serious injuries to the back of his head, face and hand. He was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and later discharged.
"Officers attended the scene and took possession of the dogs with the agreement of their owner. They have since been destroyed.
"A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of being the owner of a dog which was dangerously out of control. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries."
A Newcastle City Council spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a council operative was attending a property at Amherst Road on 23 October to carry out a routine repair. While on the street outside the property, they suffered injuries consistent with being attacked by a dog.
"The operative was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment and has since returned home. We are supporting him and his family during his recovery and are assisting the police with their ongoing investigation."
