Two flood alerts are in place overnight as Northumberland experienced severe flooding today.

On Tuesday evening, Princess Road, in Blyth, was closed and Northumbria Police advised of flooding on the A189 Northbound between Moor Farm and Bedlington. Ian Lavery, the MP for Blyth and Ashington, said on Tuesday evening that his office had "taken numerous calls about the serious flooding" in his constituency of Blyth and Ashington.

In a statement posted on social media, the Labour MP said: "We are aware that the emergency services and NCC (Northumberland County Council) are on the ground doing their best in the extreme conditions. Thank you to all the emergency service staff keeping us safe.

"I know many people have seen their properties flooded and this is just the latest in a series of recent floods affecting the area and there are a number of issues which has made them worse. The work to repair and rebuild will begin when the flooding subsides and my office and I will do all we can to support. In the meanwhile please stay safe."

The flood alerts issued by the Environment Agency cover coastal rivers in North Northumberland, and coastal rivers in South Northumberland. They warned of flooding along riverside footpaths, low lying land, and roads - and that further flooding is possible overnight as river levels remain high.

The rivers included in the warning are the River Aln and Waren Burn in North Northumberland, and the River Lyne, Sleek Burn and Seaton Burn in South Northumberland. Belford and Waren Mill are said to be particular areas of concern.

The Met Office has predicted at least 70% chance of rain for most of Wednesday for Blyth, though by Thursday afternoon the showers are forecast to have cleared up.
