The funeral details for former Westmeath TD and beloved figurehead Mary O’Rourke have been announced.

Often nicknamed Mammy O'Rourke, the former Fianna Fáil minister passed away yesterday afternoon, and she had a career that spanned beyond the reach of politics, with TV and radio appearances.

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the Fern Dean nursing home, Dublin on Thursday at the age of 87.

The seasoned politician will be reposing at The Strand Funeral Home, Athlone (N37 EXK0) on Sunday, 6 September from 3pm to 6pm.

Mass of the resurrection will take place on Monday, 7 September at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Coosan at 12pm, followed by burial in Coosan cemetery.

Ms O’Rourke is predeceased by her parents PJ and Ann Lenihan, her brother’s Brian and Paddy, her sister Anne, her nephews Mark Lenihan, Caoimhìn Lenihan and Brian Lenihan (jnr), her sisters in law Ann Lenihan, Brìd Lenihan, Gertie O’Rourke, Maureen O’Rourke, her brother in law Seamus Walsh and her much loved husband Enda.

She and husband Enda have two sons, Feargal and Aengus, and six grandchildren.

Aengus has served as mayor of Athlone, while Feargal is a Managing Partner at PriceWaterHouseCoopers.

Mary had a political career that spanned across four decades, and was first elected to the Dáil in the Longford-Westmeath constituency in November 1982.

Politics was in her blood, as she hailed from prominent Athlone political family, the Lenihans, and her brother Brian was also a long-standing Fianna Fáil minister.

A number of her family members have also followed in the family footsteps, as her nephews, Brian and Conor Lenihan, were also TDs.
