The missing boy from Louth, Kyran Durnin’s last confirmed sighting was when he was in senior infants in a Dundalk school back in 2022.

More than two years ago, it has been reported that the school was under the impression the young boy was moving away at the time and would not be returning.

He was said to have finished there in June 2022.

“The school weren’t expecting him back, so there was nothing untoward when he didn’t return that September,” a source told the Irish Independent.

A search is underway for the boy from Louth, with it being referred to as “looking for a needle in a haystack” according to the source.

They added: “A large timeline has to be covered to determine when exactly this child was suspected to have been killed from the time he was last seen in school.”

It is being treated as a murder investigation following his disappearance. The gardai cover a large geographical area and a long timeline.

The source said: “This doesn’t necessarily mean nobody has seen him since then [June 2022], but there have been no further confirmed sightings to date.

“This was in Dundalk [where he went to school], while he also had family residing in Drogheda.

Gardaí haven’t yet been told what exactly happened to him or where he is, so they are covering a large geographical area as well. While progress is being made, it’s like trying to look for a needle in a haystack at this stage.”

Kyran would now be eight years old and was reported missing in Drogheda on 30 August. An Garda Siochana was told he had been seen two days earlier. Those investigating believe he has been missing for much longer.

Gardaí said in a statement that the investigation is being led by a Senior Investigation Officer (SIO), based out of an incident room established at Drogheda Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who has any information in connection with the disappearance of Kyran to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, will be welcomed by the investigation team. This information will be treated in the strictest confidence," the statement said.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
