Body recovered during search for woman in Galway Bay missing after swim

A body has been found in the search for a missing woman in Galway Bay.

32-year-old, Máire Ní Fhátharta has been missing since Tuesday morning November 12th, after going for her regular swim at Silverstrand that morning.

The body was recovered near Rusheen Bay, Co Galway this evening and was transferred to the morgue at University Hospital Galway.

A post mortem examination is due to take place.

An estimated 700 volunteers, along with the state rescue services were involved in a massive search for Ms Ní Fhátharta.

The Lifeboat Service, Coast Guard, Gardaí, Civil Defence, the Garda Water Unit, Mountain Rescue, the Oranmore-Maree Search Team, Cave Exploration Specialists and the Irish Navy were also involved with the search.

The search for Ms Ní Fhátharta has now been stood down, however formal identification has yet to occur and this process remains ongoing.

The alarm was raised for Ms Ní Fhátharta after she failed to turn up for work. Her car was subsequently found in car park at Silverstrand.

A GoFundMe fundraiser raised over €200,000 to towards the search effort.

A garda statement said: “An Garda Síochána continues to provide our support to the loved ones of the missing woman and a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed."

“An Garda Síochána would like to thank the local community in Galway, volunteer organisations, and search & recovery services for their care and assistance over the past eleven days.”

The remains of songwriter Johnny Duhan were also recovered from the water shortly after he went missing on the same day.
