For those living in small homes or flats, the struggle to find space for their belongings is all too real. Clutter can quickly build up, causing not only a physical mess but also affecting mental health.

According to a survey by the cleaning pros at Dr Beckmann, nearly half of UK residents struggle to store their possessions in their homes.

To tackle this issue, Dr Beckmann has teamed up with TV decluttering expert Mr. Carrington to share his top tips for clever storage solutions. He explained: "When our homes get smaller in size, every inch of space matters, and keeping things organised can be a challenge. Over filled storage units can become cluttered and chaotic leading to increased levels of stress."

Mr. Carrington's advice for making the most of limited space includes utilising an often-overlooked feature - doors. He suggested: "The back of the door offers tons of potential storage. Use an over-the-door rack to store your shoe collection."

Additionally, he recommended using the back of doors to hang wicker baskets for storing accessories like umbrellas, making every inch of the room work harder, reports Bristol Live.

Likewise, he proposed maximising the area above a doorway by installing a shelf for extra storage. He noted: "The ledge formed by the door frame is an ideal location to add a shelf, providing supplementary storage for books or other decorative items, thus freeing up other spaces in the room."

Furthermore, in the kitchen, if worktop space is limited, adding an extra shelf could be highly beneficial. Mr Carrington suggested: "Bulky appliances clutter countertops but finding shelves designed to fit over your microwave, toaster, or kettle, will create a handy spot. Make sure to double-check with the manufacturer before purchase to ensure health and safety measures are taken."

Additionally, when it comes to cleverly tidying away small items that tend to scatter everywhere, he has a handy tip. He observed: "Picnic baskets make excellent storage containers. Use them throughout your home to store anything from socks, shoes, towels and even plates.

"They're breathable and lightweight, and if you get a few in varying sizes, you can stack them to save even more space."
