New 20mph speed zones confirmed in Devon - full list

by · DevonLive

New 20mph zones have come into force in two Devon towns. Torbay Council says they will make the roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists and improve residents' quality of life.

The council said the residential of areas Queensway in Torquay and Fisher Street in Paignton were identified as places which would benefit from reduced vehicle speeds. The zones came into force from Thursday (December 12) following a consultation.

The council says slower vehicle speeds improve visibility, allowing drivers to react swiftly to any unpredictable pedestrian movements. It says the lower speeds also lead to reduced noise and improve air quality.

Cllr Adam Billings, cabinet member for pride in place and parking said: "We want to see our roads become safer for all users, and residents enjoy a better quality of life. Reducing vehicle speeds in residential areas, particularly around schools, is one of the ways we are tackling this.

"I'd like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation over the proposals, and I'm delighted that we have now delivered these two schemes."
