Man dies after emergency at Devon sports centre during dog show

A man has sadly died at a sports centre in Devon during a dog show. A major emergency response was seen outside the Culm Valley Sports Centre in Cullompton yesterday afternoon, Sunday, October 20.

DevonLive reported that a number of emergency services attended the scene, including an air ambulance. The Terrier Club of Devon and Cornwall are understood to have been holding a dog show inside the sports centre at the time.

At about 1.15pm police were called following a concern for welfare of a man. The man, in his 70s, had become unwell during the show.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics. Despite their best efforts the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at 1.15pm on Sunday 20 October following concern for the welfare of a man in Cullompton.

"The man in his 70s had become unwell at Culm Valley Sports Centre. Ambulance and the air ambulance attended.

"The man, from Tamworth, was treated by paramedics but despite their best efforts he was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

"Police are not treating the death as suspicious."

A spokesperson for Mid Devon District Council said: "Following a medical emergency at Culm Valley Leisure Centre on Sunday, leisure centre staff, helped by members of the public, carried out emergency first aid on a gentleman until the ambulance crews arrived. We would like to thank all our staff and customers who assisted during the incident.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 13:11hrs on Sunday 20 October to an incident in Cullompton. We sent two double-crewed ambulances, and air ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene. We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.”
