Encourage peace lilies to flower in autumn by doing 3 important jobs

by · DevonLive

While the spring blooming season has passed, leaving the white flowers of peace lilies to fade, now is the opportune moment to encourage these plants to bloom anew.

If you've maintained the lush green foliage of your peace lily, but are finding it difficult to coax out new flowers, fear not—there are methods to promote flowering during the cooler months.

Gardening experts from Gardening Know How have shared that with the "correct" care, the likelihood of your peace lily blossoming can be greatly enhanced.

Soil

For soil, the peace lily should be planted in a well-draining mix, rich in organic content. A combination of potting soils with elements like perlite is ideal for fostering healthy growth.

Watering

When it comes to watering, the specialists recommend using distilled water, as peace lilies may react adversely to certain minerals and chemicals in tap water. It's best to water the plant generously once a week, but only after the top few inches of soil have dried out.

If your peace lily starts to wilt, it's a telltale sign of dehydration and an indication that it needs more water, reports the Express.

Light

As for light, the advice is to place the plant in an area that avoids direct sunlight yet is still sufficiently illuminated. The experts suggest, "Gradually move the plant to brighter light if it is in a very dark room," as this could trigger a non-blooming peace lily into producing flowers.

It's not unusual for peace lilies to refrain from flowering in their first year after purchase, but with patience and the right conditions, they will thrive. Achieving the ideal indoor blooming environment can be a challenge during winter months, so following all the recommended steps is vital for promoting flowering.

According to Gardeners' World, one of the most effective ways to stimulate new flowers is to feed the plant with fertiliser during spring and summer. Now that those seasons have passed, don't be disheartened if the peace lily doesn't bloom this autumn due to a lack of fertiliser.

Peace lily houseplants can live for up to 20 years, so there's plenty of time to feed the hungry plant early next spring. With the addition of fertiliser and the best living conditions for the plant, beautiful blooms are likely to flower throughout the next year.
