Woodside Animal Welfare Sanctuary in Plymouth has a record number of greyhounds, prompting an urgent call for them to be rehomed. Situated on the outskirts of Plympton, the sanctuary is looking after six greyhounds, some of whom have been waiting for their permanent homes for nearly two years.

Despite receiving numerous weekly enquiries for other dogs, interest in the greyhounds has dwindled, as noted by the charity.

Lisa Darcy, the sanctuary manager, expressed her concern: "I can't recall a time when we've had six greyhounds waiting for a home.

"What's more concerning is that, despite us homing well at the moment, the greyhounds continue to have no interest.

"When you work here you think 'why haven't you got a home? ' We've had lots of volunteers recently who have said the same thing."

Darcy highlighted the charm of these animals, saying: "They didn't realise how adorable the greyhounds are but, once they have made that initial meet, they soon fall in love with them. We would like people to think outside the box and consider a greyhound."

The sanctuary is eager to find loving homes for Mikey, Tiger, Bobby, Gracie, Jet, and Reagan all delightful greyhounds in need of adoption. Tiger, in particular, is a five year old full of life, affectionately described as a bundle of energy who adores everyone he meets.

Tiger is a spirited companion who has become a friendly face to all the other dogs at the sanctuary.

Among the many charming residents at Woodside is Mikey, a three year old bundle of joy who relishes playtime in the sanctuary's fields and loves a good cuddle. Bobby, another resident, holds the record for the longest stay at Woodside, having spent 651 days there.

This five year old friendly chap will literally leap with happiness at your arrival and adores a good ear scratch.

Gracie, a beautiful girl with a lively and unique personality, enjoys making new acquaintances. Having previously lived in a home, Gracie likes spending time with her canine friends, provided they maintain good manners and respect her personal space.

Eight year old Jet had only ever encountered greyhounds before his arrival at the sanctuary. Gradually introduced to other breeds, he's beginning to realise that other dogs can be enjoyable companions too.

Reagan and Lola(Image: Woodside)

The most recent greyhound addition to Woodside is Reagan, who arrived alongside Lurcher X Lola after their owner tragically passed away and their subsequent carers could no longer provide for them. The pair share a strong bond and are seeking a retirement home together.

Eight year old Reagan is a tranquil, friendly boy, while 15 year old Lola is a delightful lady with a gentle disposition.

Reagan and Lola are still getting accustomed to their surroundings, but with love and support, their unique personalities are beginning to emerge. According to Lisa, many people have misconceptions about greyhounds, which often leads to them being overlooked.

Despite being the fastest breed, greyhounds are surprisingly laid-back and don't require a lot of exercise.

In reality, most greyhounds are gentle giants who adore snuggling up on the sofa. Their calm nature makes them perfect companions.

Lisa noted: "They're just such beautiful companions. They adapt well to people's busy lives and need less exercise than most people think."

"They are low-maintenance dogs who usually walk well on a lead and are generally quite chilled. They still have lots of personality though and have excitable spells when they are bouncy and playful."
