Myanmar hosts 42nd ASEANPOL Conference

Member of the State Administration Council (SAC) and Union Minister for Home Affairs, Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, attended the opening ceremony of the 42nd ASEANPOL Conference at the MICC I in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday as an honorary guest.

The event was graced by special guests such as INTERPOL Chair Mr. Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, Chiefs of Police and Senior Police Officers from ASEAN countries and their spouses, delegates from Dialogue Partners including Russia, Australia, China, INTERPOL, and the ASEAN Secretary-General's Office. 

Observers from Timor-Leste, the ICRC, the UAE, as well as ASEAN diplomats and other invitees were also present.

Prior to the opening, the INTERPOL Chair and delegation leaders met with SAC Member Union Minister Lt-Gen Yar Pyae.

During the ceremony, the Chief of Myanmar Police Force delivered a greeting speech, followed by the inauguration of programs marking ASEANPOL’s establishment. 

A video showcasing ASEANPOL’s activities since its inception in 1981 was also presented. Special guests made remarks, and Lt-Gen Yar Pyae delivered the opening speech, officially launching the conference.

Following the opening, several meetings were held, including the First Plenary Meeting, the Forum of Leaders of Delegation, and meetings involving Leaders of Delegations and Dialogue Parties, along with sessions of Commissions A, B, and C.

Commission A and B addressed issues such as illicit drug trafficking, terrorism, arms smuggling, human trafficking, wildlife crime, maritime fraud, commercial crimes, cybercrime, and transnational fraud. 

Commission C focused on the database system (e-ADS), mutual support for criminal cases, police training, and the establishment of the ASEANPOL forensic science network.Myanmar, which joined ASEAN in 1997 and ASEANPOL in 1998, previously hosted the 20th ASEANPOL Conference in Yangon in 2000 and the 32nd in Nay Pyi Taw in 2012. 

The theme of the 42nd ASEANPOL Conference is "Strengthening Regional and Global Partnerships to Combat Transnational Crime." The conference, which started on 22 October, will continue on 23 and 24 October.
