Prisoner, 40s, dies after 'incident' at Cloverhill Prison as Gardai launch investigation

A technical and forensic examination of the scene is currently taking place and the local coroner has been notified

Gardai have launched an investigation after a man died following an "incident" at Cloverhill Prison in the early hours of this morning.

Shortly after 5.30am on Saturday morning, October 5, authorities raised the alarm regarding an incident in the prison during which a male prisoner, who was aged in his 40s, suffered injuries.

Despite immediate medical treatment, the man was subsequently pronounced dead.

A technical and forensic examination of the scene is currently taking place and the local coroner has been notified.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told The Irish Mirror this morning that: "Gardaí at Ronanstown are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death of a prisoner at Cloverhill Prison in Dublin on Saturday, 5th October 2024.

"Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Gardaí and emergency services were alerted by prison authorities to an incident within the prison. A man in his 40s, who was injured during the incident, received treatment from emergency services but was pronounced deceased a short time later.

"The scene remains preserved for a full forensic and technical examination. The Coroner has been notified and the services of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau have been requested.

"A Garda Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been assigned to the family of the deceased.

"The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow."
