Some 200 children in State care or known to State Care services have died in the past 10 years.

The shocking allegation was made by the Aontu leader Peadar Toibin in the Dail earlier this week before details of the horrific Kyran Durnin case emerged.

He also raised the whole issue of child poverty and Irish kids in care with the Taoiseach Simon Harris.

Deputy Tobin claimed a fifth of the 200 who died were suicides – and many more died of drug overdoses.

He said a further 11 were murders, adding: “It is incredible that more than 5 per cent in State care or known to State Care services have been murdered.”

He said all the children had no voice and no one to speak up for them.

Deputy Tobin also claimed some of the cases were referred to CAHMS – the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service – by Tusla and they refused to take them.

He told the Taoiseach: “Some of the children died by suicide.”
