Four women charged with money laundering linked to Drogheda organised crime

Four women charged with money laundering offences linked to organised crime in Drogheda are to face trial by judge and jury in the circuit court.

The four have been remanded on station bail to appear before Drogheda District Court on January 20.

Amy Murphy, 25, of Martello Close in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, is charged with three counts of money laundering contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act on dates between February 2020 and November 2022.

She is also charged with two counts of unlawful possession of drugs contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act and two counts of possession with intent to supply contrary to Section 15. Ms Murphy is also charged with counts of theft and social welfare fraud.

Alisha Thornton, 21, of Moneymore, Drogheda, is charged with two counts of money laundering on dates between January 2021 and December 2022 and counts of theft and social welfare fraud.

Bernadette Thornton, 44, of the same address in Moneymore is charged with two counts of money laundering on dates between March 2020 and December 2022.

Patricia Connor, 42, of an address in Moneymore is charged with two counts of money laundering on dates between October 2022 and June 2023.

Court presenter Sergeant John O’Hehir told Judge Nicola Jane Andrews the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial on indictment in the circuit court.

Sgt O’Hehir also said the DPP has directed the four be sent forward on a signed plea for sentence in the circuit court should that arise.

Solicitor for Ms Connor said books of evidence will be required. None of the four addressed the court during the short hearing.

Legal aid was granted to all four. Judge Andrews remanded the four on continuing bail to appear before the court on January 20,2025.
