Man, 30s, charged in connection with serious assault of two gardaí in Temple Bar

A man has been charged in connection with the alleged assault of two Gardaí in Temple Bar in the early hours of Saturday morning, which left one of the victims with potentially life-changing head injuries.

The individual, who is aged in his 30s, is expected to appear before Dublin District Court later this morning.

A second man, also aged in his 30s, continues to be questioned at a Garda station in the Dublin region, having been arrested in connection with the same incident.

The two officers, who are members of the Dublin Regional Armed Support Unit, were allegedly attacked from behind as they walked in the Dame Street area around 1.30am on Saturday after attending a Christmas party.

One of them fell and hit his head on the ground during the alleged attack, suffering serious head injuries. He was rushed to Beaumont Hospital, where he underwent surgery on Sunday night. The other officer was treated for injuries at St. James’s Hospital in Dublin before being discharged on Saturday evening.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said investigations into the incident are continuing.

“A man in his 30s arrested by Gardaí at Pearse Street investigating a serious assault on Dame Street, Dublin 2, on Saturday, 14th December 2024, has been charged,” they said.

“He is expected to appear before Dublin District Court, Court 3, Criminal Courts of Justice this morning, Tuesday, 17th December 2024.

“A second man in his thirties, arrested in connection with the incident, continues to be held at Garda Station in the Dublin Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”
