Gardaí suspect this young man was murdered and dumped in a remote spot where he lay dead for several days.

Officers found the remains of 27-year-old Stephen Ring in water at Carrigfoyle quarry in Co Wexford.

There was a strong Garda presence at the quarry and walking trails on Forth Mountain, Shelmalier Commons, from Saturday afternoon, with the Garda helicopter playing a part before the discovery was made early yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí quickly blocked off the access road to and from the quarry and sealed off the crime scene. Officers combed the walking trails, which would ordinarily be busy with families on a Sunday, while a Garda diving team was reportedly tasked with carrying out a search of the lake.

The quarry and surrounding trails are likely to remain closed for a number of days as a full forensic examination of the scene is carried out.

The discovery was made following a missing persons appeal after he was last seen in Wexford town on Tuesday, October 15. Gardai, acting on information, set about searching the woodland area yesterday. Sources say the body had injuries consistent with assault.

Following the shocking discovery, gardai arrested a man and a woman in connection with Mr Ring’s death and a murder investigation has now been launched.

There are fears he lay dead for up to 12 days. Tributes have since poured out on social media for the victim.

Posting a photo of him, friend Emma Wall said: “Heartbroken. Heart of gold. Sleep tight trouble, we’ll love you forever Stephen Ring.”

A Garda spokesman said: “Officers in Wexford are investigating the discovery of a body of a male, aged in his 20s in Shelmalier Commons, Co Wexford, on Sunday.

“The body remains at the scene which is currently preserved.

“The Garda National Technical Bureau have been notified and a technical examination of the scene is taking place. A male aged in his 40s and a female in her 30s were arrested.”
