One dead, another injured in 'critical' Coromandel incident - tourist attraction owner

One person has been killed and another injured in what police have described as a "critical" incident, the owner of a remote Coromandel tourist attraction says.

Jeff Howarth, who runs the Waterworks on the 309 Rd near Coromandel town, says a large number of emergency services are at the scene.

Howarth says he gave CPR to one of the victims.

Police are responding to a critical incident in the Coromandel this afternoon.

Further details are are unclear, but two Westpac Rescue helicopters headed to Waiau in the Coromandel and were shown as leaving on a flight tracking website.

A St John spokesperson confirmed one person had been airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

The spokesperson said they were notified just before 2pm and one ambulance, one first responders unit and two helicopters attended.

"This is all the information we can provide, please refer to police for further details."

Police said in a statement "The 309 Road is currently closed and members of the public are advised to avoid the area.

"More information will be released when we are in a position to do so."
