The man who died after being assaulted in a Levin house last Thursday has been named by police as 57-year-old Terrence Clough.

A 31-year-old man has been remanded in custody, charged with murder, after appearing in court on Friday over Clough's death.

Detective senior sergeant Dave Thompson said police investigating the alleged murder were keen to speak with anyone who was around Chester Street and Levin North School between 9.30pm and midnight last Thursday.

Officers were particularly interested in information about a man in dark clothing and with no shoes on, walking by himself, he said.

Detective inspector Craig Sheridan previously said emergency services were called at 10.10pm after a 57-year-old was assaulted.

"Despite attempts by paramedics to resuscitate the victim, he died shortly after at the scene."
