Homicide investigation launched after prisoner dies at Mt Eden Corrections Facility

A homicide investigation has been launched following the death of an inmate at Mt Eden Corrections Facility on Friday morning.

Police were called to a "sudden death" incident at the Lauder Road address just before 10am.

The man was located decreased in his cell at the facility with numerous injuries.

Police are speaking with a man in connection with the death.

The prisoner was in a double-bunked cell, and the second prisoner who was residing in the cell has been secured in a single-cell while these investigations are ongoing, the Department of Corrections said.

The death has been referred to the coroner, and a post-mortem examination will likely take place tomorrow.

Police, the Department of Corrections and the independent Corrections Inspectorate will be carrying out a full investigation.
