- ABVP, NSUI, AISA, and SFI are the key contenders
- Strict security measures in place at North Campus counting centre
The counting of votes for the long-delayed Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections began at 8 am today at North Campus, nearly two months after polling was held. The results, initially scheduled for September 28, were postponed following a Delhi High Court stay order.
The delay in counting stemmed from a court order addressing election-related grievances. Despite this, violations of the High Court's directive on defacement were evident, with roads across campus strewn with posters and pamphlets.
Results for four key positions in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU)—president, vice president, general secretary, and joint secretary—will be declared today. A total of 21 candidates are contesting these posts, with eight candidates vying for the President's position, five for Vice President, and four each for Secretary and Joint Secretary.
KEY CONTENDERS IN THE STUDENT ELECTIONS
The elections are set to witness a fierce contest among prominent student bodies, including the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI), and the Left-aligned coalition of the All India Students' Association (AISA) and Students' Federation of India (SFI).
- Presidential Race: ABVP's Rishabh Chaudhary, NSUI's Rounak Khatri, and AISA's Saavy Gupta are the frontrunners for the post of president
- Vice Presidential Post: ABVP's Bhanu Pratap Singh, NSUI's Yash Nandal, and AISA's Ayush Mondal are vying for this position
- Secretary Position: The secretary's post is being contested by ABVP's Mitravinda Karanwal, NSUI's Namrata Jeph Meena, and SFI's Anamika K
- Joint Secretary Role: ABVP's Aman Kapasia, NSUI's Lokesh Choudhary, and SFI's Sneha Aggarwal are in the race for this position.
Counting is being conducted under heavy security, with three-layer barricading set up by Delhi Police at the North Campus counting centre. DU has issued strict rules barring students from celebrating within campus premises post-results. Affidavits were taken from candidates to ensure compliance.
Currently, the RSS-affiliated ABVP holds a majority in the DUSU, occupying the posts of President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary, while NSUI holds the Vice-President's position. The results of today's contest will determine whether this balance shifts.
